What is Modal Auxiliary Verb? Uses in English Grammar

A modal auxiliary verb is used to show necessity, credibility, willingness, possibility. Unlike most Verb there, is only one of these verbs. Typical, Verb form change to indicate whether the sentence’s subject is singular or plural.

Use of the Modal Auxiliary Verb:

USES OF “CAN”

1. To Express availability (physical or mental)

Example:-

• [a] I can do this work
• [b] I can speak English
• [c] He can face any trouble
• [d] you can solve this problem within an hour.

1. To express Phrasal can use
   Example:-
   [a] I cannot help laughing.
   [b] she cannot help Sing.

USES OF “COULD”

1. To Express availability (physical or mental)
   [a] he Could a job
   [b] when he was young, Could eat Twenty loves or bread.
2. To express polity request.
   Example:-
   [a] could I come in? (A more polite request).
   [b] may I come in? (A Polite request).
3. To Express capability in the past (Could+Have+V)
   Example:-
   [a] you could have done the work alone, (but you don’t)
   [b] I could have answered the question, (but you don’t)

USES OF “MAY”

1. To Express possibility in present.
   Example:-
   [a] it may rain today
   [b] she may come tomorrow
   [c] they may be watching a movie.
2. To Express Permission
   Example:-
   [a] may I come in?
   [b] He May a Now.

To Express Wish Aur Prayer in optical sentence.
Example:-

• [a] may you live long!
• [b] 2. may Success Kiss you feet!
• [c] may God Punish the Culprits!

USES OF “MIGHT”

1. To Express Polite request.
   Example:-
   [a] might I use your Pen? A Polite request)
   [b] you might speak in the meeting (permission )
2. To express purpose in the past.
   [a] he ran so fast the he might catch the train.
   [b] she work hard so that she might pass.

USES OF “MUST”

1. Express necessity/ compulsion in the present.

Example:-

• [a] I must go now.
• [b] you must vacate the room immediately
• [c] he must consult a Good Doctor at Once.

1. Express Permanent ruling or Prohibition.
   [a] we should follow the traffic rules (Permanent rules)
   [b] you must not on The Wrong Side Of The Road, (permanently prohibited}

USES OF “SHOULD”

1. To express advice and suggested.

Example:-

• [b] you should take exercise daily
• [c] you should speak the truth

1. To express moral obligation.
   [a] we should help the poor and needy.
   [b] we should be obedient to our parents.

1. To express past habit
